Defence stocks are shares of companies that work in the defence and aerospace industry. These companies make aircraft, missiles, radars, warships, electronic systems, communication equipment, or other defence products. In India, this sector includes large government-owned as well as private companies.

Defence stocks have attracted a lot of investor attention in the last few years. One reason is the sharp increase in domestic defence production. India’s production reached a record ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY26, from ₹84,643 crore in FY21. Defence exports also reached a record ₹38,424 crore in FY26.

The Atmanirbhar Bharat push has played an important role. This focus has been on making more defence equipment in India instead of depending on imports. This has created more opportunities for Indian defence companies. However, strong sector growth doesn’t mean every defence stock performs well. You still need to look at the company, its valuation, financials and future orders.

Hindustan Aeronautics

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, or HAL, is one of India’s major aerospace and defence companies. It is a government-owned Maharatna company and works mainly with the Indian armed forces. HAL designs, manufactures and maintains aircraft, helicopters, aero-engines, avionics and other aerospace equipment. Its work includes platforms such as LCA Tejas and Su-30MKI.

The company also has a large role in aircraft maintenance and upgrades. This gives HAL business opportunities beyond manufacturing new aircraft. At the same time, the company remains closely linked to government defence orders. They have a wide presence across the aerospace value chain.

Bharat Electronics

Bharat Electronics Limited, or BEL, is another major defence PSU. It is a Navratna company under the Ministry of Defence and was established in 1954. BEL mainly works in defence electronics. Its products include radars, communication systems, electronic warfare systems, avionics, naval systems, weapon systems and electro-optics.

The company has also been expanding into areas such as cyber security, space electronics, unmanned systems, medical electronics and railways. This mix gives BEL exposure to several parts of the defence technology market. Its business is also linked to the increasing use of electronics and technology in modern military systems.

Bharat Dynamics

Bharat Dynamics Limited, or BDL, is again a government-owned defence company that mainly manufactures guided missiles and related defence equipment. Its product range includes surface-to-air missiles, air-to-air missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, torpedoes, launchers and countermeasure systems.

BDL works with organisations such as DRDO and foreign OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) for production of different defence systems. Its business is therefore closely linked to India’s missile and weapons programmes. The company can benefit from higher demand for indigenous missile systems.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, or GRSE, is a defence shipyard based in Kolkata. It builds warships mainly for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. Its work includes frigates, anti-submarine warfare vessels, survey vessels and patrol vessels. The company also has capabilities in ship repair and engineering.

GRSE received Navratna status in June 2026. Its revenue from operations increased from ₹1,754 crore in FY22 to ₹7,002 crore in FY26. It has also delivered 8 warships during FY26. The company is also working on multiple domestic and international shipbuilding projects.

Data Patterns

Data Patterns (India) is a defence and aerospace electronics company. Unlike the large defence PSUs, it focuses strongly on electronic systems and technology. The company works across areas such as radars, electronic warfare, satellite systems and test equipment. It provides solutions to customers including the Ministry of Defence, DRDO, defence PSUs and private companies.

Data Patterns reported an order book of ₹9,265 million as of March 2026. Its FY26 revenue was ₹925 crore, compared with ₹708 crore in FY25. Its business is also linked to India’s growing need for locally designed defence electronics.

5 Things to check before you buy defence stocks

You shouldn’t pick a defence stock only because its past returns look good or because someone recommended it. Check these 5 important things before investing:

  • Order book: Check how many orders the company has and how strong those orders are. A large order book can support future revenue. However, the company also needs to execute the orders.
  • Growth: Look beyond the stock price. Check whether sales and profits are actually growing over time. See how much debt the company carries and whether its operations generate enough cash.
  • Valuation: A good company can still be an expensive stock. Compare the PE ratio with its own history and other companies in the sector.
  • Execution: Getting an order is only one part of the story. Delays in production or delivery can affect revenue and profits.
  • Technology: Defence technology keeps changing. Look at whether the company is investing in research and new systems.

The bottom line

Investing in defence stocks may involve tracking defence budgets and new military orders. Also, if a single stock you invest in falls, the risk can be higher. If you prefer a more balanced approach, you can explore defence sector mutual funds, which give you defence sector exposure without selecting individual stocks.

There are several defence-focused funds and ETFs available to invest in. You can explore defence sector funds on the Millions app and compare them based on your investment goals and risk level. Also remember, defence is a long-term theme. Short-term price movements can be driven by news and market sentiment. But if you believe in the sector’s potential, you can focus on long-term investing rather than chasing every rally.
