Momentum investing is based on the idea that stocks showing strong price movements may continue to perform well for a period. Rather than buying a company simply because its share price appears inexpensive, a momentum strategy looks for signs of strength, such as rising prices, increased trading activity, and improving market trends.
Samco Active Momentum Fund is a useful example. Launched in July 2023, it uses a data-driven process to identify stocks showing momentum characteristics. The strategy considers price movements, volume, volatility, breakouts, and relative strength when making investment decisions.
This does not mean the fund will always benefit from rising markets. Momentum strategies can struggle when market trends reverse suddenly. A stock that has performed well recently may lose value quickly when investor sentiment changes.
Samco’s investment approach also includes risk-management rules intended to address concerns such as liquidity, concentration, volatility, and the quality of businesses held in its portfolio.
CEO Viraj Gandhi and CIO Umeshkumar Mehta lead the AMC. Mehta also helps manage several of the fund house’s schemes. Other fund managers include Nirali Bhansali, Dhawal Dhanani and Vishal Shinde.
Although Samco Securities has a longer operating history, Samco Mutual Fund is a relatively young AMC. Its earliest schemes began in 2022, so some funds have three years of performance history, while newer offerings still have limited histories.
| Scheme Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Flexi Cap | Samco Flexi Cap Fund |
| Multi Cap | Samco Multi Cap Fund |
| Large & Mid Cap | Samco Large & Midcap Fund |
| Small Cap | Samco Small Cap Fund |
| Thematic Equity | Samco Active Momentum Fund |
| Sector/Thematic Opportunities | Samco Special Opportunities Fund |
| ELSS | Samco ELSS Tax Saver Fund |
| Hybrid | Samco Dynamic Asset Allocation Fund, Samco Multi Asset Allocation Fund |
| Arbitrage | Samco Arbitrage Fund |
| Debt | Samco Overnight Fund |
Samco Flexi Cap Fund allows investment across companies of different sizes without a fixed allocation to each market-cap segment. Samco Multi Cap Fund, on the other hand, follows the minimum allocation requirements applicable to multi cap funds.
Samco Small Cap Fund focuses on smaller companies, where growth opportunities may come with sharper price fluctuations. Samco Active Momentum Fund takes a different approach, selecting stocks based on momentum characteristics rather than market capitalisation alone.
The hybrid schemes combine different types of investments. Samco Dynamic Asset Allocation Fund adjusts its allocation between equity and debt-related instruments, while Samco Multi Asset Allocation Fund provides exposure across multiple asset classes.
For investors looking at shorter-term debt investments, Samco Overnight Fund invests in overnight securities. Its risk profile differs from that of an equity fund, though returns are not guaranteed.
Samco also offers an ELSS Tax Saver Fund. It has a mandatory three-year lock-in, and eligible investments may qualify for Section 80C deductions under the old tax regime.
Samco Asset Management Private Limited manages the investments, while Samco Trustee Private Limited oversees the mutual fund’s operations. KFin Technologies Limited acts as registrar and transfer agent, and Deutsche Bank AG is listed as custodian.
These arrangements establish oversight and responsibilities for managing scheme assets. They do not remove investment risk.
The risk differs considerably between Samco’s schemes. Small cap and mid cap funds can also experience substantial volatility, particularly during periods of market uncertainty or reduced liquidity.
Hybrid funds spread investments across different assets, but diversification does not guarantee positive returns. Their performance depends on how the underlying assets behave and how the portfolio is managed.
Samco Overnight Fund invests in instruments with very short maturities and has a lower-risk profile than the AMC’s equity schemes. Even so, it should not be treated as a bank deposit or a guaranteed-return investment.
Before investing, check the scheme’s Riskometer, investment objective, portfolio holdings, and latest disclosure documents.
For the three-year comparison, the figures below are taken from Samco’s official scheme performance disclosures dated 31 August 2026. They represent annualised returns for Direct Plan – Growth Options.
3-year performance comparison
| Category | Scheme Name | 3-Year Category Average | 3-Year Scheme Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flexi Cap | Samco Flexi Cap Fund – Direct Growth | 10.08% | -0.96% |
| ELSS | Samco ELSS Tax Saver Fund – Direct Growth | 9.37% | 6.08% |
| Thematic Equity | Samco Active Momentum Fund – Direct Growth | 13.26% | 16.07% |
| Overnight | Samco Overnight Fund – Direct Growth | 5.91% | 5.87% |
These returns differ substantially because the schemes follow different investment strategies. For example, Samco Active Momentum Fund returned 16.07% annually over the three years, while Samco Flexi Cap Fund returned -0.96%. This does not automatically mean the momentum fund is suitable for every investor. Its investment approach and risk exposure are different.
Samco Overnight Fund’s 5.87% annualised return also should not be compared directly with equity returns without considering its shorter-duration debt investments and different risk profile.
5-year performance comparison
None of these schemes has completed five years as of 8 October 2026. The lack of five-year scheme returns reflects the funds’ age, not their performance quality.
Investors can still examine shorter-period returns, portfolio changes, expense ratios, and how individual schemes have performed against their stated benchmarks.
You must note that past performance may or may not continue in the future. Therefore, use it as one part of your research rather than a guarantee of future returns.
Once you’ve narrowed down the category, review the expense ratio, portfolio holdings, investment process, and fund management team.
It is also worth checking whether a new scheme would overlap significantly with investments you already hold.
Minimum investment requirements differ between schemes. For example, Samco ELSS Tax Saver Fund has a published minimum initial investment of Rs. 500. Several other schemes, including Samco Flexi Cap Fund and Samco Active Momentum Fund, have published initial lump-sum minimums of Rs. 5,000.
SIP minimums may be lower, and some schemes may have restrictions on fresh subscriptions. Check the latest scheme information and transaction availability before investing.
You can also use the SIP calculator available in the Tools section on Millions.
Suppose you’re considering investing Rs. 6,000 every month for 12 years. Enter the monthly amount, investment period, and assumed rate of return to estimate how much your investment could grow.
The calculator illustrates, not a guaranteed future value. Actual mutual fund returns depend on market conditions and may be higher or lower.
Before investing, make sure you understand what the scheme holds, how its strategy works, and whether the investment amount fits your budget.
